Counselling Psychologist

It’s time to feel more secure in yourself and find your way forward

Dr. Björg S. Hermannsdóttir, Counselling Psychologist. Based in Bristol and serving clients online across the UK and Iceland.

I work with clients who are willing to get honest with themselves. Even when it’s hard.

If you are ready to explore what life can look like when you’re not held back by anxiety, doubting every move, and struggling to connect, it is the right time to get started.

You’re here because something isn’t working

- and it hasn’t been for a while.

You’ve spent enough time trying to cope while feeling disconnected from yourself and your life. You are tired of fear and anxiety stopping you from reaching your potential.

And chances are, this isn’t your first attempt at trying to work things out.
You may have spoken with friends or family, searched online for answers, or even tried therapy before.
Maybe you feel like things shouldn’t still be this difficult.

So now that you’re here, you might be wondering:
what will be different this time?

How I approach our work together

In our sessions, my focus is to get to the core of what’s going on for you.

That means paying attention not just to what you say—but also what you leave out. You’re a whole person, and your story is not as simple as it first appears.

Together, we’ll start connecting the dots—understanding how things got to where they are, and what might still be keeping you stuck despite your efforts to change.

From there, we’ll look at specific, practical ways to shift things, taking small, manageable steps that you can apply in your day-to-day life.

Over time, the aim is for you to:

  • trust yourself more

  • feel clearer about what you want

  • and start showing up in your life and relationships in a way that actually feels right to you

What it’s like to work with me

Clients often describe me as warm, honest, encouraging, and direct.

I aim to create a space where you can:

  • speak openly and reflect without judgment

  • slow things down and look beneath the surface

  • feel seen and understood

At the same time, I won’t just sit back and agree with everything.

When something feels important, I’ll challenge you—especially if it helps you stay honest with yourself.

I’ll also check in along the way to make sure we’re on the right track and that the work we’re doing actually feels useful to you.

Turning insight into real change

Once we’ve built a clearer understanding of what’s going on, we’ll focus on how to apply that insight in real life.

That might look like:

  • trying out small changes in how you approach situations

  • practicing new ways of communicating

  • noticing what gets in the way—and adjusting as we go

If something doesn’t work, we’ll figure out why and adapt it together.

The goal isn’t to get it “right” the first time—it’s to keep the work moving in a way that fits your life, even when things feel messy or uncertain.

Why this work matters to me

I know what it’s like to feel stuck in patterns that don’t work - to feel lost and to struggle with a sense of unease and anxiety.

I’ve seen, both personally and professionally, that meaningful change is possible when you have the space to be honest, understood, and challenged in the right ways.

Alongside that, I bring formal training and experience, including:

  • a PhD in Counselling Psychology

  • over 18 years of experience across a range of settings

  • and more than 10 years in private practice

A flexible, integrative approach

I draw from a range of therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and more exploratory, depth-focused work.

Rather than sticking rigidly to one model, I adapt how I work based on what’s actually helpful for you—whether that’s addressing patterns in the present or understanding how past experiences continue to shape things now.

My aim overall is to help move you forward, from a place of feeling stuck to a way of being that makes you feel alive and well.
