In our first appointment, we will go over some practical information regarding our work together and we will then discuss what has brought you to therapy. I will ask you questions to get to know you and gather information about your background and circumstances. We will then talk about what you want to get from our sessions and what our work might look like.
When working with couples I generally suggest having the first session all together so the couple can share what they want from therapy, after which I like to see each partner separately for an individual assessment session to get a better idea of their individual story and concerns. Subsequent sessions are then held together until the couple is ready to stop therapy. -
The length of therapy can vary from a few sessions to several months. We will review our progress regularly and when you are ready to continue the work independently we will discuss whether to space out our sessions or stop therapy.
Some people find that a few sessions are enough to address specific problems, whereas long-term therapy (a year or more) can be very beneficial for others. If I get the sense that it might be helpful for you to pause therapy to build confidence in your ability to navigate life independently, I will bring that up and we can discuss how to proceed. In any case, the door stays open for you to return for additional sessions or a check-in.
